The Attorney General of California is the chief legal officer of the state, responsible for leading the Department of Justice and overseeing the enforcement of state laws. This position is elected for a four-year term, with a two-term limit. The Attorney General holds broad authority in legal matters, including the prosecution of state law violations and the defense of California in both criminal and civil cases.

Rob Bonta is the current Attorney General, appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom in March 2021 to replace Xavier Becerra, who left to serve as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. Rob Bonta was subsequently elected for a full term in 2022

The Attorney General’s office handles investigations into legal issues that affect the state, such as consumer protection, environmental law, and public safety. Additionally, it provides legal advice to state agencies and local governments, ensuring that laws are applied fairly and consistently.

Beyond legal advocacy, the Attorney General also plays a key role in public policy by implementing initiatives aimed at reducing crime, safeguarding civil rights, and combatting corruption. Through partnerships with law enforcement agencies and community leaders, the Attorney General’s office is a critical force in upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights and welfare of California’s residents.
