Legislative Spring Break - Calm Before the Storm
The Legislature is enjoying its 10-day spring recess, so there will be no floor or committee hearings this week in Sacramento.
When they return, it’ll be a mad dash to meet the policy committee deadlines on May 2nd, followed by wrapping up work in the fiscal committees before reaching the house of origin deadline on June 6th—which is coming up very, very quickly. Bills that don’t make it past the house of origin deadline will become two-year bills and could be taken up again next January.
Also, the Governor’s May Revision is expected in mid-May, and that’s when things will get serious regarding the state’s spending plan. While revenues have been coming in higher than the Governor forecast, expenditures have also been growing faster than anticipated. His May Revision will be an interesting look at how he plans to balance the state’s books.
