New Members in the 2025-26 Legislative Session
There are 24 new members of the Assembly and 13 new members of the Senate, for a total of 37 new legislative members. That means nearly one-third of the California Legislature will be new to their office. That’s a significant amount of change in a single election cycle. One of these new members, Suzette Valladares, previously held an Assembly seat but lost her re-election bid in 2022. She returns to the Legislature after her successful run in November 2024.
Of special note, the largest class of women legislators in the state’s history will be sworn in, bringing the total to 49% of its members being women. This marks a record high of 59 women who will serve in the next session—double the number of women serving just seven years ago.
